Memories of Karl Roden

by Ellen Hildreth
from the Braegen August 1986

That crooked smile; the ever-present cigarette; and only Ballantine's scotch (he simply refused to drink any other brand); extraordinary pride in his three children (when the twin girls were born, he said, he was so nervous he popped a stick of Juicy Fruit gum in his mouth and lit it up!); a love of classical music and the ballet; great frustration that he wasn't a better teacher for his guitar students; stubborn; resistant to change; always ready for a good argument; a friend.

From the Canton Repository

Born in Louisville, he had been a Canton resident most of his life. He was a  retired auditor at Olson Electronics. At the time of his death, he had a private accounting practice and taught guitar lessons at Pellegrino Music Center. He was a member of the Canton Federation of Musicians, Mensa, and had served as treasurer and was a member of the board of the East Central Ohio Chapter of Mensa.

From the Akron Beacon Journal

"Mr Roden joined Mensa ... when the Cleveland area group was formed in 1964.  ... Roden told a Beacon Journal reporter two years ago that he was not convinced that IQ and intelligence were synonymous. 'Many persons say Einstein would not have done well on an IQ test, and I'm not sure what Edison would have done,' he said.

"When the Cleveland group had grown to about 750 members, about 250 decided in  May 1980 to break off and form a group in Canton."

Karl J. Roden Scholarship
Wednesday, 02 February 2011 16:47

Karl J. Roden was the first Treasurer of East Central Ohio Mensa and held in warm regard by many members. After his untimely death March 23, 1983, members wanted to honor his memory, and determined to put the existing annual scholarship award program in his name. That program, originated in 1981, is a cash award to a recipient selected from applicants who have submitted an essay for judging.

If not the first in Mensa, this was one of the first essay-based scholarship programs offered by a local group. It has also been among the largest scholarship awards made by Mensa local groups. The concept was picked up right away (or thought of concurrently) by Mensa Education & Research Foundation (MERF), which currently sponsors and administers a separate substantial program of scholarship awards across the United States and internationally.
