Why I go to Final Friday Fling meetings (one member's opinion) PDF Print E-mail

Perhaps we all want something different out of our FFF? I for one look forward to learning something new or at least being exposed to different ideas and information... *whether or not I agree with it*.

Of course I also like to renew friendships, which can be done before and after speakers and at other programs, but I view the FFF as a wonderful opportunity to expand my horizons. I am less than thrilled with a talking head about something I've heard before. I don't want a "controversial" speaker at every meeting either, but once or twice a year might be a nice change of pace and offer a challenge to my established view of things.

Getting out of my "comfort zone" [sometimes unwillingly] is the only way I know to force consideration of unfamiliar or unwelcome viewpoints. Scheduling these events at times other than the FFF is likely to fail. People don't like to question what they already *know* and will probably reject the challenge if given the opportunity. Once exposed, however, I think most would appreciate the enlightenment. :)

We have learned that the East Central Ohio Mensa "Uncle Churd" team, composed of Janet Harriett, Wil Huff, Barbara McIntyre, Jim McIntyre, Brian Rock, Catherine Rock, and Trae Guillán Russell, has taken first place in the annual Culture Quest competition.

In addition to the undying glory of this accomplishment, the team's exploits have won a $400 award for ECOM, the local chapter of Mensa.

Culture Quest is an annual trivia contest that's really aimed at testing cultural literacy. Click the link for more information.
